Data governance in the connected bike industry
I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Katie Sawyer of Bike Europe on the growing importance of data governance in the connected bike industry. As the bicycle industry becomes increasingly digital, technology is playing a central role across products, services, and maintenance. At the same time, compliance is becoming more complex, especially in relation to data protection, data sharing, and cybersecurity.
In the interview, I explain why integrated compliance in terms of data protection, data sharing, and cybersecurity will be a key differentiator between companies that can harness the value of data and those that risk being overwhelmed by it and exposed to serious sanctions.
I also emphasise the broader point that the GDPR is a risk-based regulation grounded in accountability. When organisations replace that logic with box-ticking and documentation for its own sake, they often lose sight of what compliance is really meant to achieve. When done well, compliance is not just about avoiding fines. It is about building trustworthy products, reducing risk, and creating long-term competitive value.
