As the year comes to a close, I would like to take the opportunity to share a few highlights from the speech I gave at the graduation ceremony for the students of the Advanced Master in Privacy, Cybersecurity, and Data Management at ECPC, Maastricht University, on 29 November 2024.

📚 Theme: Lifelong Learning Attitude

Good afternoon everyone!

Today, we celebrate your incredible journey — a culmination of hard work, resilience, and countless moments of determination that have led to this remarkable achievement…and we want to praise you for this!

Graduates, this moment is yours. You have overcome challenges, embraced growth, and demonstrated not only your capabilities, but also your commitment to learning, even in the face of obstacles. Whether it was balancing work, coping with your family obligations and pursuing an Advanced LLM at the same time, or re-activating and retraining your cognitive capabilities to study after a number of years of “inactivity” or … let’s say … “less activity” 😉.

As we gather to honour your accomplishments, let us also reflect on what this day truly signifies.

We live in a fast-paced, ever-changing world where knowledge evolves, industries transform, and skills are constantly redefined. The Advanced Master’s degree you now hold is a testament to your hard work, but it is also a reminder that education is not confined to classrooms (physical or virtual) or defined by exams. Instead, it is a lifelong pursuit—a mindset that embodies curiosity, adaptability, and a readiness to embrace the unknown. So I will not be surprised if some of you will sooner or later embark in another high level learning venture as a “serial lifelong learner”.

Your resilience—defined for students in line with ENISA’s definition as “The ability of a system student to provide & maintain an acceptable level of service in the face of faults (unintentional, intentional, or naturally caused) affecting normal operation” — in navigating these past years is a testament to your ability to thrive in times of change. Whether it was late nights spent studying, overcoming moments of self-doubt, or managing multiple responsibilities, you have shown that learning goes beyond acquiring knowledge. It is about perseverance, creativity, and an unwavering belief in your capacity to grow.

Lifelong learning is about more than advancing your career or acquiring new skills—it is about becoming the best version of yourself. It is about enriching your perspective, fostering empathy, and contributing meaningfully to the world around you, also bringing with you the concept that data protection and cybersecurity are matter of social responsibility.

So, as you celebrate today and look ahead to tomorrow—when you’ll emerge from tonight’s well-earned festivities—hold onto the same motivation that brought you to this moment. Remember, your ability to learn, adapt, and grow is your greatest strength. You have already shown that you can overcome any challenge that comes your way.

A “Lifelong Learning Attitude” is what one needs to excel in this world, and it is what you already have!
